From cranberry farm to blueberry history

The Whitesbog Preservation Trust says the farm began in 1857 and later became one of New Jersey's largest cranberry operations. Joseph J. White expanded the enterprise, while Elizabeth Coleman White helped develop cultivated highbush blueberries here in the early twentieth century. The village's cottages, packing buildings, bogs and fields preserve the work and community life behind those crops. Whitesbog is listed on the state and national historic registers, according to the Trust.

What to see on a self-guided walk

The Trust lists several routes, including the Historic Cranberry Trail past workers' cottages and a demonstration bog, a Blueberry Trail near Elizabeth White's home and test field, and a short Nature Trail toward pond boardwalks and gardens. The grounds and trails are part of Brendan T. Byrne State Forest; the operator lists daily outdoor access from sunrise to sunset. Trails are sandy or uneven in places, so use the official trail maps and hours to choose a route that fits your group.
