Atsion Mansion brings the industrial history of the Pine Barrens into a house you can tour. Built in 1826 for ironmaster Samuel Richards, the restored home sits at Atsion Recreation Area in Wharton State Forest near Shamong. NJDEP describes guided tours on weekends, but the schedule can change; check with the park office before you drive.

Richards used the mansion as a summer home while operating Atsion's furnace and forge. Ownership later passed through families who tried new uses for the village. Joseph Wharton acquired the property in 1892 and used the house to pack and store cranberries from nearby bogs. New Jersey acquired Atsion in 1955. NJDEP says the house has been restored to its 1826 appearance and was never modernized with plumbing or electricity.
