Why Somers Mansion matters

John Somers acquired land beside Great Egg Harbor Bay in the late 1600s and operated a ferry across the bay. His son Richard built the house by 1726, when Quaker meeting records first noted it. The family occupied the property for more than two centuries, and the settlement that grew nearby became Somers Point. The house later passed to the Atlantic County Historical Society and then to New Jersey, which restored its colonial appearance in the 1940s.

What you may see

NJDEP describes a three-story house built of brick in a Flemish bond pattern. The collection includes regional quilts, woven coverlets, samplers and 18th-century family furnishings. Interior access and programs depend on the site's current schedule; a drive-by view should not be treated as a promised house tour.
