Indian King Tavern in Haddonfield: A Statehood Story

Current access: closed until further notice. Indian King Tavern is a landmark of downtown Haddonfield and New Jersey's Revolutionary era. Its state operator has posted a restoration closure advisory. The history is worth knowing now, but do not assume that older published hours or occasional event listings mean tours have resumed.

A meeting place in 1777

The New Jersey State Park Service history says the General Assembly met at the tavern in 1777 as war made other locations unsafe. It was here that the Declaration of Independence was read into the Assembly minutes and the Great Seal of New Jersey was adopted. The tavern was part of Haddonfield's busy Kings Highway corridor, where public houses connected travelers, trade and politics.

What remains of the tavern

The building dates to the mid-eighteenth century. Later owners changed its use and appearance; New Jersey acquired it in 1903, making it the state's first owned historic site. Preservation has since sought to reveal its earlier form while keeping the building standing. The ongoing work includes exterior masonry, trim and interior repairs, described in the state historic preservation project summary.
