Built in 1848, this wood-frame Greek Revival house was the only home Walt Whitman ever owned. He lived here from 1884 until his death in 1892. In Camden, the poet welcomed visitors and worked on the final comprehensive edition of Leaves of Grass. The New Jersey DEP project update calls the house an important literary landmark and describes the new visitor and interpretive center.
The state is restoring the exterior of the historic home and adding an accessible visitor center with exhibits about Whitman's life and writing. That work should make more of the story available to people who could not previously navigate the old house. The reopening date is a projection, not a reservation or tour schedule. Avoid old search results that still show routine tour hours.

As of October 11, 2026, DEP says the property is closed for the duration of construction, with reopening expected in 2027. Do not plan interior or grounds access until the state posts a new notice. The state contact number is 856-964-5383. Use the DEP update for the current project status.
