Home / Historic places / Dr. James Still Historic Office
The Dr. James Still Historic Office in Medford tells the story of a self-taught healer whose work reached well beyond Burlington County. This is a focused historic-site visit, not a walk-in medical museum with daily hours. NJDEP currently lists public opening on the first and third Sundays of each month, with additional visits by arrangement; check the state page before traveling.

Born in 1812 to formerly enslaved parents, James Still became known for botanical remedies and a practice built despite limited access to formal education. His life connects medical history, Black entrepreneurship and the struggle for opportunity in nineteenth-century South Jersey. NJDEP also places him within the Still family story, which includes abolitionist William Still and Peter Still. Read NJDEP's site history.
The preserved office is the reason to come: it puts a physical place beside a biography that can otherwise feel abstract. Ask the site staff about interpretation and any special programs when you plan your date. The office is at 211 Old Church Road in Medford; this is a short, intentional stop rather than an all-day attraction.
NJDEP lists first- and third-Sunday opening from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and says additional visits can be arranged. The state lists no entrance fee. Verify the exact date, special-program schedule and any access needs on the official Dr. James Still page or by calling 856-367-1704. Source checked October 11, 2026.
Pair Medford with the Whitesbog Historic Village guide for another distinctive Burlington County story, or use the Burlington County hub to choose a town and places nearby. Leave room between stops because Still Office access follows a limited schedule.
