The story behind the beacon

Cape May's present lighthouse is the third documented beacon at this point. It began service in 1859. The Coast Guard still maintains the light, while Cape May MAC interprets the historic structure and manages public access under an agreement with the state. Restoration began after Cape May MAC took responsibility in the 1980s; the organization opened the tower to visitors in 1988.

Those layers make this more than a scenic overlook. Panels at the grounds and along the climb explain keepers' work, the surrounding coastline and the light's role for mariners. The Oil House at the base has an orientation center and museum shop.

Should you climb?

The main climb is 199 steps on an open-grid cast-iron spiral staircase. Six levels have landings where you can pause and read. At the top, the watch gallery opens the view across Cape May Point and the water. Wear shoes suitable for stairs; Cape May MAC advises against heels on the metal treads.

You can still make a worthwhile stop without going up. The Oil House is described by Cape May MAC as fully accessible, and the park offers trails and nature interpretation. Check the operator's accessibility information for your own needs and ask about any current restrictions.

Where, when, and how much

The lighthouse is at 215 Lighthouse Avenue, inside Cape May Point State Park. Cape May MAC posts admission by age and eligibility on its official lighthouse page. On October 11, 2026, it listed the last climb as 15 minutes before closing and warned that lightning or severe weather can close the tower. Daily opening hours vary, so use its live calendar before making a long drive.

The state park generally offers daylight access to trails, but lighthouse climb hours are separate. Parking and restrooms are available in the park, according to the operator. Do not assume a park visit includes a tower ticket.
