Why Batsto matters

Batsto’s industrial story began in 1766. Its furnace supplied iron goods, including cannonballs, during the American Revolution. Glass production followed, making windowpanes and streetlights before the factory closed in 1867. Joseph Wharton bought the village in 1876 and recast it as a farming and milling community and private estate. The state later acquired the surrounding land, now part of Wharton State Forest.

Iron and glass

The preserved village helps explain how local forests, sand and water powered two important South Jersey industries.

A living landscape

Batsto is also part of Lenapehoking. Its longer history predates the ironworks and continues beyond the industrial story.

What to see on a visit

Give yourself time to explore the village grounds and read the on-site interpretation. The state highlights an 1852 post office, an 1882 water-powered sawmill and the 36-room Batsto Mansion. The visitor center adds context before a walk; mansion tours are scheduled separately.
